Thankful Thursday: Mirror the Light
As the Closet Guru, this is my quest, this is my mission and this is my promise. We behave beautifully when we feel beautiful, but often many just do not see how beautiful they are. They confuse and compare themselves and feel lacking, as a result. We all have a light in us, a light that we can and must share. It is my job, in any way I can, to hold a mirror to the beauty that I see in anyone, whenever I am given the grace to be in their presence.
As a Fashion Designer and Spiritual Stylist, I was asked recently, who my role models are, and why. My reply: The late Princess Diana, Mother Teresa, Mahatma Gandhi and the still living Tony Meloto of Gawad Kalinga. All brilliant in their own ways, and human, like us all. Their appeal to me is primarily spiritual and has very little to do with their wardrobe. I am drawn to these icons because of their benevolence and gumption.

Slowly, but surely, I have come to see that. I am humbled by the realization that as I see beauty and kindness in others, my own beauty and gift is making itself known, and making the world a better place, in my case, 1 closet or 1 photoshoot, at a time.
Yes, Mother Teresa and Mahatma Gandhi lived in the third world, serving those in circumstances more dire than most of us can or want to imagine. Lady Diana pioneered the use of Celebrity to a higher calling and brought light and love to such causes as well. Tony Meloto, still alive, spends all his time bringing homes, skills and dignity to those who have been shoved aside in a country whose population is bursting at the seams.
And, on a local scale, I am humbled by the generosity of my husband, my family, my friends, the grocer and those who cross my path every day. A smile does wonders. A phone call can lift a spirit, and seeing our reflection for what it could be, such as Light and Love will change your world and the lives of those around you.
“I highly suggest you do not seek the approval or recognition of those you admire, but instead cultivate in yourself that in which you see in them,” Kiddard wrote. “There is a creative genius within you – let them out.”
Tony Meloto will be in Paris on May 17th to inspire us and show us what can be accomplished by love and a benevolent heart. He is coming to speak to my friends and peers, and he is coming to speak to, and inspire many more. He will be in France to spread the word of his mission and his model to end poverty for 5 million families by 2024. While the affair I am hosting will be a small and intimate one, Mr. Meloto will be addressing business leaders and business schools around the country, as well, on how they can make the world a better place for us all.
Ending poverty for 5 million families is just the beginning, and Gawad Kalinga is well on its way. Many have already heeded the call and believe, like Mr Meloto that we can not be truly rich, when others are so poor.
Over the last 2 years, I have had the gift of spending time with Tony Meloto in The Gawad Kalinga Enchanted Farm, in the Philippines. I also have the priviledge of calling him Tito (or Uncle), and when I asked him how someone like me could possibly be of service to this movement, he replied: “We are the answers to the questions we ask. Challenge the impossible, create the possible. In helping the most imperfect, we all become more perfect…”
He is an inspiration to me. May you all be inspired, as well. For more information on Tony Meloto and Gawad Kalinga, visit http://www.gk1world.com/home
Today is an incredible day and I am so very thankful. Happy Thursday everyone!
Namaste,
Michelle
